Atlas Orthogonal

At Hayden Chiropractic Center, our goal is to help patients recover their natural good health and enjoy life. Dr. Hayden is a highly trained specialist in the Atlas Orthogonal Technique that can be the key to returning your body to a balanced and healthy condition.

What is the Atlas?

The Atlas is the top bone of the spine. It is the vertebrae that the head rests on. The average human head weighs between 9 and 14 lbs. This is a tremendous amount of weight to sit on top of such a narrow area as the spinal column. With the multitude of ways we can turn our head, it is not surprising that the Atlas can slip out of proper alignment. A wide variety of Trauma, from falls to auto accidents, can cause such misalignments to occur as well as poor posture and even sleeping the wrong way.

What is the Atlas Orthogonal Technique?

An Atlas Orthogonal Specialist has specialized, post-graduate training in the structure, function and biomechanics of the upper cervical spine. The A.O. Technique (Atlas Orthogonal) is a safe, effective and gentle program utilizing precision treatment without drugs, surgery or spinal manipulation.
After a thorough history and examination, Dr. Hayden will seek out misalignments of the Atlas (the top vertebrae in the cervical spine) by measuring the length of the patient’s legs. Such a misalignment or subluxation, can cause the body structure to become unbalanced and result in muscle contractions that result in one leg appearing to be shorter than the other.
If the spine becomes abnormally curved, even by a small degree, profound results may occur. If left untreated, the health of the entire body may be affected. This is especially true when the cervical spine (neck) is misaligned.

What is Body Balance?

The Atlas is in perfect position when it sits level or square (Orthogonally) on the cervical spine (neck) and the head is sitting square on the Atlas. This is the true definition of the old phrase “Having Your Head On Straight!”.

When misalignment of the Atlas occurs, the head begins to tilt. The body then reacts automatically to try to straighten the head while keeping it centered over the feet. This instinctive search for a return to body balance causes a great deal of stress on the spine, the shoulders, pelvis, hips, knees and ankles.
